East West University Hosts a Public Lecture on ‘World Trade and Bangladesh’

East West University (EWU) organized a Public Lecture on ‘World Trade and Bangladesh’. The event was addressed by renowned economist, Professor Dr. M. G. Quibria, whose insights captivated the audience at the ‘Manzur Elahi Auditorium’ of the university on 17 December 2024 (Tuesday). Dr. Quibria, an esteemed economist with extensive experience at the Asian Development Bank (ADB), emphasized the need for Bangladesh to diversify its export markets beyond Europe and the USA, focusing on neighboring countries like China and India. He highlighted the importance of investing in health and education to develop skilled human resources and urged the government to address critical and vital issues like oil, gas, electricity, and banking sectors to remain competitive in the global economy.  

The event was presided over by Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chief Adviser of EWU and a former Governor of Bangladesh Bank, who pointed out that political and social stability are essential to attract foreign direct investments. He also stressed the need for fair competition in business policies and tax exemptions, avoiding favoritism to create an equitable business environment in Bangladesh. 

The program began with a welcome speech by Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, Vice Chancellor of East West University. The lecture concluded with a Q and A session, providing students and journalists an opportunity to engage with the esteemed speakers. 

The event was attended by Nowshad Shamsul Arefin, Member,Board of Trustees, EWU, Prof. Dr. M. Ashik Mosaddik, Pro- Vice Chancellor, EWU, prominent economists of the country, faculty members, students, and officials of EWU.
