EWUCRT Hosts Seminar on Microbial Solutions for Plastic Waste Degradation The East West University Center for Research and Training (EWUCRT) organized a research seminar titled “Isolation and Characterization of Plastic Waste Degrading Microorganisms from Landfill Soil” on November 27, 2025, at the EWUCRT Seminar Room of East West University (EWU). The research was presented by Dr. Murshida Mahbub, Assistant Professor, and Dr. Suraia Nusrin, Associate Professor, and Chairperson from the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at EWU, along with Dr. Jesmin, Professor from the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Dhaka. Their collaborative work focuses on identifying and characterizing microorganisms from landfill environments that are capable of degrading plastic materials. Professor Dr. M. Ashik Mosaddik, Pro Vice Chancellor of EWU, chaired the event. The session featured Mohammed Ziaur Rahman, Head of the One Health Laboratory and Senior Scientist at IDD Laboratories, ICDDR, B, who served as the key discussant at the seminar. He provided valuable insights into the scientific and practical significance of the findings. In his opening remarks, Professor Dr. Sohel Rana, Executive Director of EWUCRT, emphasized the institution’s commitment to promoting impactful and solution-oriented research.
The seminar concluded with an energetic question-and-answer session that encouraged active engagement among faculty members, students, and distinguished guests. Notably, the event drew the participation of Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, EWU.
