EWUCRT Organizes Seminar on Dialect-Aware AI for Early Detection of Postpartum Depression

The East West University Center for Research and Training (EWUCRT) organized its 130th research seminar titled “From Tears to Care: Developing a Dialect-Aware AI Platform for Early Detection of Postpartum Depression in Bangladeshi Mothers” at the EWUCRT Seminar Room on 21 May 2026. The research is the outcome of a collaborative effort by a team of scholars, including Dr. Md Sawkat Ali, Associate Professor, Ms. Sanzana Karim Lora, Lecturer, Dr. Mohammad Rezwanul Huq, Associate Professor, Dr. Maheen Islam, Associate Professor and Chairperson, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, East West University, and Dr. Rifat Shahriyar, Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.
The seminar was jointly presented by the researchers. During the seminar, the presenters discussed the growing impact of postpartum depression among Bangladeshi mothers, particularly in underserved communities where early diagnosis and mental health support remain limited. They also highlighted the development of a dialect-aware AI-based Bengali screening tool designed to improve culturally relevant and accessible detection of postpartum depression across different regions of Bangladesh.
The Pro-VC, treasurer, deans, chairpersons, faculty members, research students of EWU, and EWUCRT officials attended the event. Following the presentation, an interactive and productive Q&A session was held. The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by the session Chair, Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of East West University.
