MPS Departmental Colloquium Highlights the Future of Nuclear Energy in Bangladesh

Jul 10, 2025

The Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) at East West University hosted an engaging colloquium on July 10, 2025, featuring a keynote presentation by Dr. Afroza Shelley, Professor at the Department of Nuclear Engineering, University of Dhaka.

Dr. Shelley delivered a compelling lecture titled “Prospects of Nuclear Energy in Bangladesh: The Role of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Clean Energy Transition.” Her presentation explored the structural and operational aspects of nuclear power plants, outlining their advantages over traditional energy sources. She emphasized the role of advanced safety measures in modern nuclear facilities and the potential of nuclear energy to support Bangladesh’s shift toward a sustainable energy future.

A key focus of the talk was the strategic significance of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in reducing reliance on fossil fuels and providing a stable, large-scale electricity supply. Dr. Shelley addressed Bangladesh’s growing energy needs and illustrated how nuclear energy could play a crucial role in meeting future demand without increasing carbon emissions.

The session concluded with a lively Q&A segment, during which faculty members raised insightful questions on nuclear waste management and the long-term sustainability of nuclear fuel supplies. The colloquium offered valuable perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of nuclear energy, leaving attendees with a deeper appreciation for its role in the country's clean energy transition.
