EWUCRT Hosts a Seminar on Antimicrobial Research

The East West University Center for Research and Training (EWUCRT) hosted a research seminar titled “Bioactivity-Guided Discovery and Characterization of Novel Antimicrobial Metabolites from Syzygium praecox” on April 9, 2026, at the EWUCRT Seminar Room. The seminar findings of a collaborative study conducted by a team of esteemed researchers from East West University (EWU): Md. Jahid Hossain, Lecturer, Department of Pharmacy, Md. Zahirul Islam, Lecturer, Department of Pharmacy, Dr. Md. Mohiuddin Kabir, Associate Professor, Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, and Professor Dr. Chowdhury Faiz Hossain, Department of Pharmacy.

Representing the research team, Md. Jahid Hossain delivered an insightful keynote presentation, detailing the methodology and key findings of their investigation into the potential of Syzygium praecox as a source of novel antimicrobial metabolites. The research holds great promise in the face of growing global concerns regarding antibiotic resistance.

Following the presentation, Professor Dr. Shamsun Nahar Khan from the Department of Pharmacy, EWU, served as the formal discussant, offering expert commentary and contextualizing the research within the broader field of pharmaceutical science.

The session was chaired by Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, Vice Chancellor of EWU, and the Chairperson of EWUCRT. The program commenced with welcome remarks from Professor Dr. Sohel Rana, Executive Director of EWUCRT, who underscored the relevance of the research topic and introduced the researchers to the audience.

The seminar drew a distinguished audience, including Professor Dr. M. Ashik Mosaddik, Pro-Vice Chancellor of EWU, and Air Cdre (Retd) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Treasurer, alongside numerous faculty members, EWUCRT officials, and enthusiastic students.

The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where participants actively discussed the implications of the study, further demonstrating the university's vibrant research culture and its commitment to contributing to impactful scientific discourse.
