Event Description

On 21st and 22nd November, 2020, IEEE EWU Student Branch organized a workshop on “LaTeX”. It was a 2-hour workshop which was divided into 2 parts and was conducted in 2 days. LaTeX is a software system for preparation of documents used for high-quality typesetting. It is most often used for medium-to-large technical or scientific documents but it can be used for almost any form of publishing. LaTeX helps the authors to concentrate on getting the right content by reducing the odd thinking of the appearance of their documents. The workshop was conducted by ‘Dr. Khalid Imtiaz Saad’- Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) at EWU. The Chair of this event was the Branch counselor of IEEE EWU Student Branch ‘Nusrat Jahan Ananna’- lecturer, Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) at EWU. She welcomed everyone in her introduction speech and gave consent to start the workshop on each day. During the two-day long workshop, Dr. Saad taught the participants about the basics of LaTeX. On the first day, participants got the preliminary idea of how to use it and why they should use it. They knew about various kinds of LaTeX software and their functions. On the second day of the workshop, Dr. Saad introduced the participants with the basic usage of the LaTeX software which can help them in the near future. Like- how the fonts can be changed, how one can change the format of document- i.e. IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, how section and subsection can be created, how one can put figures in LaTeX, how a Data table can be formed and how it can be organized in left, right or middle. He also taught how the references should be placed in LaTeX. He also gave some brief on the usage of word and LaTeX and the advantages of LaTeX. He showed some of the examples done by him and how that works. He also gave some tasks to the participants so that they can be familiar with this in everyday life. The participants also participated in the tasks spontaneously. The number of participants registered for this event was more than 150 and it reached over 10000 people. The Branch Counselor of IEEE EWU Student Branch thanked everyone at the end of the workshop for co-operating with IEEE EWU SB. Students from not only EWU, but also many other universities, including BUET were also present in this workshop. Many foreign students and faculties along with the alumni of EWU and the representatives of other IEEE Student Branches were also present in this workshop
